About the Institute of Philosophy and Social Sciences

In the acedemic year 2007/8, the Institute opens a bachelor study program Philosophy and social sciences. This program provides not only an overview of the humanities, but also a survey of current trends of philosophy, of various possible attitudes to doing philosophy (especially in connection with the dispute between the analytic and the continental tradition), about the mutual interaction of philosophy and various social sciences such as sociology, cultural antropology etc., and also about the practical sense of doing philosophy. This bachelor study program will be later extended by a more specialized magister program. Perspectively, we also plan a specialized program of Sociology.

The Institute also intensely participates in the programs for teachers run by the Pedagogical Faculty; especially it guarantees the subprogram of civics for both basic and secondary schools. Also it gives courses of philosophy, sociology, ethics logic etc. within several other programs of both the Pedagogical faculty and the Faculty of Humanities.

The courses are taught in the modern University building (Hradecká street), containing also the University library, computer rooms and the multimedia study room. In the neighbourhood of the building, one can find a rapidly growing University campus as well as the new buliding of the State research library. (And it is hardly possible to omit mentioning of the specific genius loci of this place, which has to do with the proximity of the historical centre with its unmistakable skyline.)
